About Hawks Nest

Hawks Nest is a small town in the MidCoast Council area, north of Port Stephens between the Tasman Sea and the Myall River. It was named after a large hawk’s nest in a tree on the Myall River that was used as a navigational aid. The traditional custodians of this land are the Worimi people.

It is a long, thin coastal town, about 16.5 km from end to end and typically 1.7 km wide, running north-east to south-west, about 220 km north of Sydney and 12 km from the Pacific Highway. It is bordered by the Tasman Sea to the east, the Myall River to the west and Port Stephens to the south.

More about Hawks Nest

The first Europeans here were timber getters who took an interest in the cedar forests along the Myall River early in the nineteenth century. Most of the suburb, about 95%, is still uninhabited, and the northern part was reachable only by four-wheel drive until the 1980s. Yacaaba, the northern headland of Port Stephens, rises to 210 m.

Hawks Nest is dominated by holiday rentals and caravan parks, so its population varies a great deal with the visitors. Jimmys Beach and the Tasman Sea beach on the east, Bennetts Beach or the Main Beach, are the popular ones, and the Myall Lakes are a short drive north. Koalas, dingoes and dolphins can be seen in the area.
